"How do we explain the fact that He’s never appeared to you?" This question I found on a blog Orangeacid.net entitled "Ten Interesting Questions Every Christian Must Answer." I’ve been responding to his blog for the past week now and trying to answer his questions. I’m not sure if the questions originated from him directly or a youtube.com video. Either way, today I will respond to this question with as much biblical support I can muster and to the best of my abilities. The author went into detail with this question and asked, "If Jesus is all-powerful and timeless, why wait for a second coming?"
According to Your Faith
This question is entirely personal because to each person Jesus’ appearance is different and may come in different ways at different times. I’ve heard speakers talk about little old women who had chats with Jesus on their bed every night. I can explain why He’s never appeared to "you" the blogger who posted this question. If you don’t believe in Jesus Christ and you aren’t known by Him He won’t appear to you unless there is a special circumstance where you are being converted from being a non-believer to a believer. If you are an atheist, the reason Jesus hasn’t appeared to you is due to your unbelief.
Biblically Speaking
Some non-charismatic churches (or those that don’t really believe in the power of the Holy Spirit) will deny that He appears to anyone, saying that the only time He will appear will be to everyone when He returns in His Second Coming predicted in the biblical book of Revelations. I believe, however, that Jesus appears to people all the time, they just don’t always talk about it. He can come in dreams or visions or even outright as in the case of the Apostle Paul’s revelation. Jesus appeared to the disciples when they were in the Upper Room and He had just been raised from the dead. Then His body was intact because He told Thomas to feel His hands and the hole in His side to prove He was who He said He was and not a ghost. Because of this biblically documented incidence of His physical reappearance, I have no doubt that He would do the same for believers today.
What Revelations Says
When people talk of Jesus’ Second Coming they are referring to the finishing of His work and the completion of His plans where He will be physically reunited with all believers in body and spirit in heaven. His glorious coming will be as obvious as lightning is seen from the east to the west. No one will miss it. Those that don’t believe in His saving power will not be taken up to heaven at that time but the dead will be raised and the believing dead and believing living will be "caught up in the clouds" with Jesus. We will be given glorious new bodies like the angels but "woe" to those that are left behind. You can read about their fate in Revelations.
Hollywood Nonsense
I think people’s faith has been so corrupted by Hollywood and movies about ghosts and the supernatural. Hollywood movies which may be the only life-like thing people can view about the supernatural are so fake and ridiculous — mostly from the evil one himself, that they have ruined people’s belief that anything good exists in supernatural form. Some people believe in angels. What’s really weird is people that believe in angels but not Jesus. Some people have such a high reverence for angels but no belief in Jesus’ saving power. Like His gospel has no impact on their lives but they believe in supernatural phenomenon like ghosts, demons, angels, and other things spiritual — even psychics. I would think that if you believed in evil spirits you’d want protection from them which only Jesus can offer. His name has authority over every name under and in heaven — this means that demons must submit to His authority.
With Faith, Anything Is Possible
I think I’m getting off topic so I’ll move back to Jesus’ appearing. When you have faith, anything can happen. God is the god of the impossible — He can move mountains, part seas, and save humanity. Surely, He can appear to His followers. But to those who don’t believe, don’t blame Jesus for not appearing to you. Humble yourself before God, ask for faith to see things you wouldn’t normally see then perhaps Jesus will appear to you. He may come in a dream or vision or He may come in flesh - either way you will know He is God because He can do anything.
I hope today’s blog answered your questions about Jesus’ appearing. May God bless you with faith so that you can see and hear from Him, too.
