Certainty In The Face of Uncertainty

Certainty In The Face of Uncertainty

As humans we can be certain of having uncertainty in our lives. We are guaranteed from the point of our conception to face conditions where we will have no control whatsoever as to their outcome. Being a human or really any animal on this planet is scary when we stare at the face of uncertainty. Thankfully, as Christians we can be confident of at least one thing, God’s faithfulness.

God’s faithfulness is spelled out and clearly demonstrated in His Word. The bible contains promises tested and true throughout. In fact, it is such a standard and time-tested model, we can even be certain of the things that are yet to come written about in the Word, such as the prophecy in the book of Revelations. As Christians we know and our faith rests upon the promise that Christ is the sovereign Lord who was resurrected after His death on the cross that redeemed all humanity from the power of death and sin.

If you are a Christian, there are promises made in the bible that guarantee your security. One is that "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved," (Joel 2:32 NIV). When you call on God for help you are confessing your need for Him. You are admitting and confirming your belief that He is almighty and has the power to save. Only God can save us from death and condemnation. Only Jesus had the power to conquer sin. He lived a sinless life and died a sinner’s death. His death was the sacrifice that saved humanity. Jesus is the way, the truth and the light. He says in John 10: 7-10 (NIV),

"I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

God knows that life on earth can be frightening. Perhaps that is why He tells His children at least three hundred times in the bible not to fear. Jesus himself cautioned against the perils of worry. He said,

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?"

When we stew about our problems or worries, we create an atmosphere of negativity that makes it difficult for the Holy Spirit to operate. If the devil can fill us with fear, we are well on our way to spiritual paralysis. All we need do is pray and "cast our cares on God," because he is the only one who can bear our burdens (1 Peter 5:7). Philippians 4:6 tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God," (NIV). The obedience of this command brings a promise, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 4:7 NIV).

I urge you today to look to God instead of staring at your own insecurities. God is sovereign and all-powerful. He created the universe. He can deliver you from evil. Thank God that He knows what He is doing even when we don’t.
