The Principle of the Path

The Principle of the Path

The Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley was a quick and interesting read. In it Andy wittingly defines what he calls the Principle of the Path stating, "Direction -- not intention -- determines our destination." He’s a very skilled writer with a lot of funny stories to tell and has a humorous expository style that will keep any reader turning pages. There is even a study guide in the back that challenges the reader to delve more deeply into his or her own life direction so as to gain insight about where it will lead.

Although the book is humorous, Andy derives his theory from scripture. He talks about King Solomon’s wisdom and his failing to apply his own good intentions to his life. In the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, Solomon imparted a lot of wisdom upon his successors but he was unable to adhere to his own theology and his good intentions didn’t stop him from taking the wrong direction as a king. You might say that Solomon was successful in a worldly way, but in a lot of ways he led his countrymen astray by going against God’s commands and marrying several wives from different nations. In trying to please his 700 wives he built monuments and temples to their foreign gods — something that God hates and had the potential to lead many away from God.

Stanley’s book talks about many facets of life, including, marriage, finances, studies, and child rearing.

From the back cover of the book:

Andy Stanley is a pastor, communicator, author and the founder of North Point Ministries, Inc. (NPM). Since its inception in 1995, North Point Ministries has grown from one campus to three in the Atlanta area, and has helped plant fourteen strategic partner churches throughout the United States. Each Sunday over 20,000 adults attend worship services at one of NPM’s three campuses. Andy’s books include It Came From Within, Communicating for a Change, Making Vision Stick, and Next Generation Leader. Andy lives in Alpharetta, Georgia, with his wife, Sandra, and their three children.
