How to De-Stress
How to De-Stress

Stress and anxiety can be potentially very harmful to the person who suffers from it. It can cause heart disease, mental anguish and lost sleep. Stressed-out people often eat too little or to the other extreme, they eat too much. There are many causes of stress. Too many commitments at any given point can be stressful. People that are toxic can be stressful. A lifestyle that is too fast-paced can be stressful. For the most part people can control their level of stress. Contrary to popular belief and American culture sometimes less is more. I’ve been reading a book recently called "The Story of Stuff." It talks about globalization, production, over-consumption and in-general unsustainable consumerism.

Continuing In Sin
Continuing In Sin

"Can’t I just do what I want, then ask for forgiveness?" This is a question of someone who doesn’t appreciate what a sacrifice God made in sending His Son to earth. The answer is no, you can’t do whatever you want and then ask for forgiveness because you’re not repenting when you ask for forgiveness. If your repentance isn’t sincere God can tell. In fact, if you want to continue in your sin without listening to the warnings of the Holy Spirit you may as well call yourself a pagan. No one who has been borne of God continues to sin (1 John 3:6). Note the word, "continues." Continuing in sin means to sin without repentance and in disregard for God’s law. Jesus says "If you love me, you will obey me," (John 14:15). If you are disobedient all the time and on purpose how can you call yourself a Christian? When you are born again the Holy Spirit will be your conscience and will prevent you from making huge sinful mistakes.

Is Masturbation A Sin?
Is Masturbation A Sin?

"Is masturbation a sin?" Someone asked this question on another website called questionsaboutchristianity.com. I want to respond to this question because I think it applies to everyone. We know there is a growing pornography industry in our country and all over the world. People in today’s society wait longer to get married than ever before. Since sexual temptation usually steps into our lives at puberty we need to address the concerns of those who face the temptation to masturbate when they are unmarried and without a partner. This topic is typically taboo in most social circles and especially Christian social circles.

What Would Jesus Eat?
What Would Jesus Eat?

"What Would Jesus Eat?" I am reading a book right now called "What would Jesus Eat?" by Don Colbert, MD. It’s a very interesting book. If you’ve ever read the book of Leviticus in the Old Testament you would realize that what we eat matters to God. Christians are living temples of the Holy Spirit and it is very important that we take good care of our bodies. Part of taking care of our bodies is in exercising but another component is what we put in and on our bodies.

Self-Pity
Self-Pity

Self-pity is one of the most destructive thinking patterns a Christian can have. As Christians, we are sons and daughters of the King of Heaven. In the name of Jesus we have authority over supernatural beings. Jesus’ name is the name above all names (Ephesians 1:20-22). God has put His very Spirit inside of us so that we may do not only His will but great things for ourselves and others. Christians should not be pitied because we have an all-powerful God as our advocate and Jesus Christ Himself as our intercessor with God. Jesus took on great suffering so that we could have the privilege of being called sons and daughters of God. His suffering was unthinkable and we can barely imagine the pain He endured as He bore the punishment for the sins of the entire world.

Will Rich People Go To Heaven?
Will Rich People Go To Heaven?

"Jesus said rich men don’t go to Heaven easily and even implied that it wasn’t possible. Why are so many people with money and property Christian if they are probably going to Hell?" This is a question posed by the website article entitled "Ten Questions to Ask a Christian," by an atheist on the website tribe.net. The bible verse in question is "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," (Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:25, and Luke 18:25 NIV). I have often pondered this verse myself, asking whether or not I should sell all my possessions in order to belong to the Kingdom of Heaven but through much searching I’ve found the answer to the atheist’s question.

Why Do Christians Today Not Follow Old Testament Law?

"Matthew 5:17-18 says quite clearly that Jesus demands Christians follow Old Testament law completely, to the smallest possible point. Why don’t they?" I found this question on a website tribe.net in an article entitled "Ten Questions to Ask a Christian." This question is posed by an atheist. In this posting I will try to answer this question. For the sake of clarity, here is exactly what Matthew 5:17-18 (NIV) says,

Were Dinosaurs on the Arc?
Were Dinosaurs on the Arc?

If dinosaurs were on the ark, what happened to them?
I came across this question on a website that asked Christian questions and answered them. The website was Christian-based so I doubt what we have to say will be in disagreement but I didn’t read the rest of their answer as to what happened to the dinosaurs. This is a simple question to answer because science tells us that man and dinosaurs never coexisted. Dinosaurs came before mankind then became extinct therefore there would have been no way for Noah to stuff some dinosaurs into the arc before the flood written about in the Old Testament book of Genesis.

Does Jesus Still Appear to His Followers?

"How do we explain the fact that He’s never appeared to you?" This question I found on a blog Orangeacid.net entitled "Ten Interesting Questions Every Christian Must Answer." I’ve been responding to his blog for the past week now and trying to answer his questions. I’m not sure if the questions originated from him directly or a youtube.com video. Either way, today I will respond to this question with as much biblical support I can muster and to the best of my abilities. The author went into detail with this question and asked, "If Jesus is all-powerful and timeless, why wait for a second coming?"

Why Does God Allow Starvation?
Why Does God Allow Starvation?

A question was posed on a website called "10 Interesting Questions Every Intelligent Christian Must Answer" that piqued my interest. The question was, "Why are there so many starving people in the world?" My answer is not complex and I don’t think this is a hard question. The person went on to say that if Christians believe that God helps them get raises and answers other prayers, why doesn’t he feed all the starving people on Earth? The answer lies in the fact that we live in a fallen world under the influence of the evil one where the majority of people do not believe in God and do not heed his commands.

Planetary Concern: Pollution
Planetary Concern: Pollution

I heard from a friend that the Gulf Coast recently had an oil spill and that thousands of gallons of oil were leaking out into the water per minute. This leak has been going on for weeks now and hasn’t been fixed. The fishing industry there is all but sunk and their fresh water is all polluted, killing thousands of animals daily. The worst thing about this is the length of time it’s been going on and the inactivity of the company that owns the faulty pipe. As we know and remember from previous oil spills, oil is deadly when released into the environment and very difficult to clean up.

Can I Lose the Holy Spirit?

Ok, so by now you know that I look for questions people ask about God, the bible, Jesus and Christianity. Today I found someone’s question, "How does one quench or grieve the Holy Spirit?" I used to think that quenching the Spirit was like putting out the flame of God’s love in your heart. I was wrong, however, because after I did some research I found out that when the bible speaks of quenching the Holy Spirit it is talking about something entirely different. In this posting I will explain the biblical meanings of quenching and grieving the Holy Spirit.

How To Get Rid of An Internet Porn Addiction
How To Get Rid of An Internet Porn Addiction

A person asked on another website, "How can I overcome an addiction to Internet porn?" I think I can help someone with this question. As we are all users of the Internet and some of us access it in the privacy of our home or office we all know there is a temptation to succumb to Internet sources of pornography. I firmly believe that Internet pornography is one of the devil’s favorite venues to creep into a person’s home and heart. Internet porn can be as filthy as one can imagine filthy, from incestuous, bestiality, sadomasochism, and perhaps what I consider the worst — child pornography. The most detrimental attribute to Internet pornography is that it is so highly personal and such a secretive addiction that it can easily become consuming for the person it afflicts. There is a way to overcome it and I’d like to talk about some ideas in this posting. From here on out when I talk about pornography you can generalize the term to mean all perverse sexual addictions that concern media, from x-rated films to romance novels, to even nude magazines.

An Expressionless Society?
An Expressionless Society?

Our culture is quickly becoming or already is an expressionless society. I’m not sure that expressionless is a commonly used word so I will describe what I mean. To be expressionless would be to be without expression. There are a number of different ways a person can express themselves. Expression could be seen in terms of manifestation of one’s individuality or personal preferences, strengths, weaknesses, qualities, and abilities. Self-expression can be as minor as dress and as major as public protest or demonstration against ruling powers. Americans may be the first to point out just how many powers and rights of expression we have. Our country’s constitution allows for freedom of expression but do we exercise that power? Do pork-barrel politics and special interests impede our ability to express ourselves or to be represented authentically in government and businesses?

Rebuttal of Atheist Claims About God

While trying to think of something to write about, I came to a website that talks about why people shouldn’t be Christians. The author made three claims about God that I would like to refute in this posting. His reasons for not being a Christian were, 1) God is silent, 2) God is inert, and 3) the evidence is inadequate. So here today, I will take and analyze all three claims made by the atheist who had a website.

How Do I Know If I Am Saved?
How Do I Know If I Am Saved?

My friend asked me today, "How do you know if you have the Holy Spirit?" Since I’ve often wondered this in the past I thought I would write a post on it. I think a lot of people ask a similar question which is, "How do you know if you are saved?" I would respond to this by saying that a saved person would have the Holy Spirit. This brings us full circle to our original question. Another familiar question would be, "How do you know if you know Jesus?" since Jesus says that in the last days not everyone that calls Him "Lord" will know Him or be known by Him. Again, my response is the same. You know Jesus when you have the Holy Spirit.

Should I Cut Ties With My Unbelieving Family?
Should I Cut Ties With My Unbelieving Family?

Someone came to my website recently asking about whether or not they should cut ties with their family and what the bible says about this. I used to wonder this, too, because Jesus makes mention that a man’s enemies will be his own household after he (or she) is saved (Matthew 10:36). He also comments, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor," in Mark 6:4 (NIV). Many Christians can probably attest to this truth. Our family, who has seen us from birth, knows all about our faults and weaknesses, problems and heartaches. They sometimes want to protect us from people and the world like Jesus’ family did when his brothers and sisters were looking for Him, thinking He was out of His mind when His ministry started and people wanted Him dead.

Some people ask what it means to be a negative person. Some people are negative and don’t realize it. Some people are negative because of their upbringing or because of a chemical imbalance. There are several traps that get people into negative thinking. In this posting I will outline them and explain them a bit and then offer suggestions on how to overcome negative thought patterns.

Making Time for God
Making Time for God

Have you noticed that the days seem to be getting shorter? Although we are approaching the summer season and the days are technically longer all of the activities that we try to cram into our days makes them seem shorter. What we do during our day indicates what matters to us. Sometimes what is important to us may not really be important at all, we may be wasting our time like lab rats on an exercise wheel. The Bible tells us that God’s ways are higher than our ways; His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). This is why we need to set aside time in our day for God.

Am I Saved if I Still Sin?
Am I Saved if I Still Sin?

Someone asked a question recently like, "am I still saved if I struggle with the same sins?" This is a question worth looking into. There is such a thing as being a baby Christian and being a mature Christian and a difference between the two. In fact, Paul warns in the bible against sending new converts into the ministry right away for fear that they fall into the same temptation as the devil — pride (1 Timothy 3:6). When a Christian first comes to Jesus they may not be acquainted with the bible or God’s teachings. Life’s lessons haven’t passed them by yet and they haven’t been able to mature in their faith. Like small children, they are still being nurtured on the "milk" of the gospel and haven’t yet moved to solid foods, so-to-speak (Hebrews 5:12). New converts are just becoming accustomed to hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it can be difficult to swallow your pride and listen to what God is trying to tell you. For this reason, some new converts struggle with obedience.

Repressed Anger and Forgiveness
Repressed Anger and Forgiveness

Anger and sadness go hand-in-hand. Some people express their anger by turning it inward and it becomes sadness or depression. Our society has sort of a taboo against expressing anger. In places like Italy people can get in a yelling match over driving then get in their cars and drive away. Here we have road rage that can become so serious it leads to death. Why is this so bad in our country? Probably because we repress so much of our anger until it becomes so hard to contain it turns explosive. Violent movies and video games don’t do much to help the situation. The bible never says not to get angry. It says "don’t let the sun set on your anger." This makes sense. It is impossible to keep yourself from feeling certain emotions when something happens to you. What matters is not how you feel but how you express your anger. The bible also says, in your anger do not sin (Ephesians 4:26).

Living Guilt-Free
Living Guilt-Free

Guilt can be a powerful motivator. It can also be paralyzing. When guilt turns into conviction that leads to repentance and acceptance of forgiveness it is a good thing. When guilt condemns and depresses people it is a bad thing.

Regardless of background and unless morally depraved, all humans are tethered to some amount of guilt. This comes from our original sin and human nature. Sin, for humans, is inescapable. We are born into a family of sin. Sin perpetuates itself through families. That is why the fall of Adam and Eve is still affecting families and children today. We are born into sinful ideals, sinful traditions, sinful families, and sinful cultures. Paul quotes Isaiah the prophet in Romans, "there is no one righteous, not one," (Romans 3:10). It is not surprising that we are in need for some type of redeeming grace to be able to draw near to a sinless God of pure light (John 12:46).

Certainty In The Face of Uncertainty

In some of the churches I’ve attended the pastors have warned against looking to signs and wonders (miracles) to see or find God. I’ve heard speakers say also, and to the contrary, that we should never lose our sense of wonder with God and be lulled into a sense of arrogant complacency where nothing moves us. After being a skeptic and trying to see the world at face value for many years, I’ve realized the importance in seeing miracles in what some would call the mundane.

Joyce Meyer never ceases to amaze me. I finished reading her book Never Give Up. Of course, I’ve been passing it around to friends so I haven’t had the chance to write a book review until now.

Joyce’s style in writing is clearly understandable with metaphors that liken Christians to birds. She describes chicken Christians and eagle Christians. The metaphor compares us to these types of birds in our Christ-walk, our love lives and in our every endeavor. She uses beautiful and romantic imagery. At some parts when she describes an eagle courtship routine I got a little teary.

Self-Control
Self-Control

"The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray," (1 Peter 4:7 NIV).

I am realizing the importance of this verse day by day. Christ has forgiven the sins of His followers. His blood paid the debt our cumulative, individual, past, present and future sin has incurred (Romans 5:9). Freedom in Christ, spoken of in Romans, is a gift offered to believers. This freedom is a freedom to choose whether or not we will sin. Before being saved, we couldn’t choose. Without the Holy Spirit, we were not motivated in faith to abstain from sin nor were we capable of living sin-free lives (Romans 7:14-20). Before God’s blessing on a person’s life offered through Christ’s sacrifice we were unable to please God. Without His Holy Spirit, we lived lives that were unsatisfactory to God because we didn’t understand the way of love which is fostered by the indwelling of His Spirit. We may have been religious, attending church regularly, tithing, or even going to confession, but our hearts were still hardened and focused on religious practices or a belief that by our own righteousness we were saved. In short, we did not know God and were slaves to our sinful nature (Romans 6:17). In contrast, God’s real presence in our lives causes us to have the consciousness of sin with the writing of the law upon our hearts (Romans 2:15). His Holy Spirit gives us the power to say no to sin and His love for us gives us the motivation to do right by His standards. With this freedom comes responsibility, however.

Watch Out!
Watch Out!

Be careful. This is my advice to sincere Christians. Before I was saved I thought that by being a good person I would get into heaven. In fact, with my superior knowledge, I would ponder, who else is getting into heaven — as if it were Harvard or Yale or some other prestigious university. My superior ability in saving myself by being a good person (speaking sarcastically now) allowed me to judge other people who weren’t saved by works, like me. I spent my whole life believing that people were saved by their good deeds — basically, I believed that God would be forced to let me go to heaven because He would be so impressed with my self-righteousness. However, as we know, self-righteousness is likened to filthy rags in the bible and God is not impressed by it (Isaiah 64:6). God knows that the only man without sin was Christ Jesus and without Him, we have no passage into eternal life (Romans 3:23). Before I was saved for real, I knew nothing of the Holy Spirit. It was not in my life. Incidentally, there would be times when I would run into someone that did have the Holy Spirit and I would instinctively know that there was something different about them. 2 Corinthians 1:22 says about the Holy Spirit, "Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come." When one accepts Christ into their life, by repenting of his/her sin and asking Jesus for forgiveness, Christ endows them with the Holy Spirit (Ezekiel 11:19). Let me just tell you, this Spirit is much to be desired.

Power in Positivity

One day a few weeks ago, I had some free time and decided I would go out. At a restaurant I visited there was a jukebox. At first, I didn’t really notice the music in the background. I just remember it being country music. As I stayed longer I watched a younger man walk to the jukebox, put in a dollar, select a song, and then go sit back down with his three friends. When the song came on it forced an immediate impact on the room’s occupants. The waiters and waitresses expressions changed, people’s interactions changed, even people’s movements were different. I don’t know the artist but the music was heavy rock with screeching guitar, loud base and violent lyrics. The music was rhythmic, however, and the person who put the song in seemed to be pleased with it. My waitress was indubitably irritated, in any event, and people became noticibly either more aggressive or more anxious.

Today the church I attend had a sermon about Mary and Martha from the bible. If you remember from the New Testament the part where Mary and Martha come in is where Jesus and the disciples are reclining at the table, Martha is in the kitchen cleaning up and Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet. Martha, Mary’s sister, says to Jesus, "Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" (Luke 10:40 NIV) "Martha, Martha," Jesus replies, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her," (Luke 10:41-42 NIV).

Recently, I spoke with someone who said that he believed as a Christian believes but not necessarily about Christ being the pivotal point of salvation. He said he believes this because he doesn’t understand "where that leaves the Jews." I’ve been studying the book of Matthew lately and it just so happens that that book explains very clearly where that leaves those under the law — in a predicament.

I’m reading a book right now called "The Power of Simple Prayer" by Joyce Meyer. Joyce is an excellent and inspiring author. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the prayer types she suggests in her book. One prayer type she advises people to pray is the prayer of consecration. In essence, the prayer of consecration is a prayer of devotion. It is a prayer, as she explains it, that cries out to the Lord, "Take me — I’m yours." She goes on to talk about the prayer of consecration as a powerful prayer that should be prayed with caution as its results can be astounding.

The book "Safe People - How To Find Relationships That Are Good For You And Avoid Those That Aren’t" by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend is a definite must-read. In it, the authors illustrate means of developing relationships that encourage and foster spiritual and interpersonal growth. There are parts that define "safe" people and safe relationships and parts that define "unsafe" relationships. You will likely find yourself in one of the character categories listed as Drs. Cloud and Townsend are skilled at the art of enumeration. In fact, one of the most redeeming qualities of the book is the way in which it is structured, using plenty of examples and classifications for each character type.

Witnessing
Witnessing

There was a time in my life when I would cringe at the words "witness," "evangelize," or "sharing one’s faith" although I knew they were some of the most important words of Christianity. In Mark 16:15 Christ says, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." The thought of this used to terrify me. Somehow early in my faith walk I was given the message that to be saved you have to save people. While this is not necessarily correct there is some truth to it.

A friend of mine was recently considering moving to another church. I counseled him not to. His reasoning was not because of bad doctrine, hypocrisy or bad practices but because he wanted to try something new and meet new people. Forgiveness
Forgiveness

It can be very difficult to forgive someone that hurts us. Oftentimes they continue to hurt us long after the incident because we allow them to. Their offenses will ruminate in our heads as we think of the clever responses we could have administered during the argument or what we could have done instead of what we did. It’s easy to fall down the slippery slope of revenge. Our minds seem to have an innate ability to focus narrowly when anger is involved. We think of their offense and all the multiple ways in which they wronged us. We try to justify their actions by labeling them or making judgments about their character. All these thoughts we have are destructive. They make us bitter, unhappy, and hot-headed. They keep our fires of anger burning.

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well," (Psalm 139:14 NIV).

Creation has been carefully sewn and intertwined by our Creator. Nature as we know it has taken thousands of years to develop and evolve. The last time the world faced a climate change as drastic as what we are currently experiencing was during the period that immediately preceded the Ice Age. What are we going to do about it? As we are now seeing, global warming doesn’t just cause heightening of the atmospheric temperature in the southern hemisphere, it causes cooling in the northern hemisphere due to the change in planetary climate equilibrium (Gore 151). Global warming is a huge threat looming over the face of humanity and all of the life forms that occupy our planet.

Envy Rots the Bones
Envy Rots the Bones

Jealousy is a powerful emotion. It can drive people mad and wreck relationships. The bible says that envy rots the bones (Proverbs 14:30). Envy can eat at a person from the inside. A jealous heart is hard to hide. Since we know that God judges our hearts and His judgments are righteous we must stay away from envy and pride. Pride and envy go hand in hand. When someone is proud they are often likely to compare themselves to others. When a believer compares himself or herself to another believer they are not acting in love. Each one of us must keep our eyes on our own walk with Christ so that we can be certain not to judge ourselves or others by making comparisons and trying to determine who is saved and who isn’t.

Is sex before marriage a sin? The bible calls sex before marriage fornication. Fornication is considered a sin according to both the Old and New Testaments (Galatians 5:19-23, 1 Corinthians 5:1, 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 and 1 Corinthians 7:1-2). However, we have confidence before God that He will forgive us for our sins when we believe in the saving power of Jesus and are indwelt with the Holy Spirit. If you have sinned this way in the past, you can ask forgiveness then plan on not doing it anymore. When the Holy Spirit convicts us that something is wrong we need to listen and with a repentant heart come to God and ask forgiveness.

Do I Have to Go to Church to Be a Good Christian?
Do I Have to Go to Church to Be a Good Christian?

"Is it necessary to go to church to be a good Christian?" The word church is sort of a misnomer in our culture used to describe a building that houses worship services for the Christian faith. When Christianity began, back during the ministry of the twelve disciples and the Apostle Paul the word church denoted a group of people or the body of Christ. Sometimes these groups met in private homes to study and learn the gospel. The Apostle Paul told the church (the group of people) that they should not give up meeting together (Hebrews 10:25). In today’s society I think that this is just as relevant to us as it was to them.

Much of what I’ve encountered has been negative and contrary to the gospel. There was even a website called exchristian.com. What have I learned from all this? One sign that someone is not very mature in their faith or that their walk with Christ is not developed is when a person is judgmental. There are some people that should be mature Christians because of their age but yet they still seek to categorize people within the church, spiritually into two realms, the saved and the unsaved.

Repercussions of Disobedience
Repercussions of Disobedience

With Christ we live under a new law of grace. God says He desires mercy not sacrifice. He also says, if we love Him we will obey Him. Living under grace doesn’t mean that we can abuse our Christian freedom to choose to sin or not. Rather, the Holy Spirit should convict us when we are sinning to stop. When Christ comes into our lives we lose the desire to sin and with the Holy Spirit we are given power to say no to sin and to desire fellowship with God. Some people, although saved, still struggle with specific sins. While Christians can sin and disobey God they shouldn’t because it will cripple their walk with Christ. If we walk in disobedience for a long period of time we can seriously compromise our ministry on earth and our relationship with Jesus.

The problem is that some Christians appear to be or claim they are without sin. Those that claim to be without sin do not have the truth in them (1 John 1:8). The truth is as Christians, we still make mistakes and sin. However, when we do sin, the Holy Spirit convicts us and we repent and ask for forgiveness knowing that we have an intercessor — Jesus, to cover our sins. Christians are still human.

In Jesus’ day a teacher of the law asked Him a similar question. Jesus answered with the Ten Commandments then later He went into a more broad definition. Someone also asked Him "Which is the greatest commandment?" Jesus replied with "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, body and soul." He also said the second greatest commandment was like the first. It was, "Love your neighbor as yourself." From these two commandments we can tell what is sin and what is not (Mark 12:28-34).

Some people, like Moses in the Old Testament times, are fortunate enough to hear an audible and distinct voice of God preceded by some miraculous sign like a burning bush (Exodus 3:1-3). However, for most people, God’s voice is much more subtle. Even the prophet Elijah heard God speaking in a small voice out of the stillness (1 Kings 19:10-12). Prophets like Daniel spoke to God in dreams (Daniel 1:17 NIV). Some people hear God’s voice in music. The question is not how does God speak — because they possibilities are endless, but rather how do you know when God is speaking?

We believed they had some inside scoop on the end times that would predict for us when it was coming and what the signs were so that we could look for them. Now I know that the Rapture is actually indicative of the day of Jesus’ return and that it won’t be that hard to spot. Eye-Gouging
Someone came to my site recently asking, "should I gouge my eye out if it causes me to sin?" This is a serious question despite what it may seem. First of all, let’s explore the issue a bit. Jesus says if your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out (Matthew 18:9). Have you ever met anyone that can sin with just one eye? Or would one body part be especially sinful over another? I don’t think so. What causes a man or woman to be unclean is what comes out of the body — sinful thoughts, wicked plans, deceitful gossip and malicious lies (Mark 17:19-21). Jesus illustrates this with the Pharisees in His time that were clean looking on the outside (almost pristine for the age) but on the inside were full of all kinds of wickedness ("dead men’s bones," etc.)(Matthew 23:27). The body part that causes one to sin is not really a body part at all. It’s the mind or the heart and not the physical organs either. Were it the physical parts Jesus might be suggesting lobotomies or heart transplants in physically healthy organs.

Word Power
Word Power

Did you know that words can have power? The things that come out of our mouths sometimes can determine which direction our lives or circumstances will lead — either to a favorable or unfavorable outcome. Sometimes when something negative comes out of our mouth it seems to solidify or make manifest our fears or thoughts about our situation. What was previously a worried thought can become an actual event or fixed mindset once it has been released from our lips.

There are many books out that also proclaim a new ideology of the power of thoughts and the spoken word. Words originate as thoughts therefore thoughts have an impact on our attitudes or relationships and mindsets or belief systems. Some authors say that thoughts transmit a frequency into the atmosphere that is perceivable on a meta level by the entire universe. While humans don’t have the cognition that they perceive the thoughts of others they still will often pick up on peoples thoughts based on their body posture, facial movements and speech.

His beauty emanates, His light radiates from our once cold hearts now reborn to start beating for him, shining through Him, glowing for Him, all for Him — callous trimmed, filled to the brim, thorns and thistles replaced with love sown with His own tears which replace our fears.

Knowing His grace, reveals His face — shining like the sun, a friendship won.

Spirit of Fear
Spirit of Fear

Recently, I was gripped with fear. My emotional paralysis came about when I started to entertain the idea that the end of the world was fast coming. Lately, I’ve been feeling the imminence of the end times. I would turn to the left and realize that there was no exit there then turning to the right, I would find the same blockade. My mind was basically frozen in a state of worry. Most people have undergone something similar but theirs might have stemmed from financial troubles or familial difficulties that seemed insurmountable. For some it escalates into a panic attack and lasts moments, while for others, living in a perpetual state of fear is commonplace. When the terrorist attacks of 2001 hit many people accepted fear into their way of life.

Mending Wounds
Mending Wounds

It is easy to become distracted by day to day inconveniences. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is pushing against us. There is definitely a battle going on. We are surrounded by media and information. There is a lot to do and a lot of new things to learn and experience. At the same time, the pace of the current American culture is becoming increasingly hard to keep up with. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, they are coping with the grieving processes associated with losing parents and children moving out of the home. The youth culture is rapidly expanding and people are focusing more on images of physical beauty and wealth. With the population growing, many are turning inward to escape the outward pressure of conformity. Many are trying to increase their visibility, desiring a lifestyle glorified in the media of fame and instant gratification.

Differences
Differences

People that know me know that when I go places, a lot of times, I have my younger sister with me. My younger sister is nineteen and is physically and mentally disabled. She has what is known as Rett Syndrome. She cannot talk or walk and she can’t make purposeful hand movements.  She can, however, enjoy life.

Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit

Are you right with God? Have you opened up your life to Him? I know some parts of my life God is slowly working His way through. I’ve heard a lot of people say that you need to give your life over to Christ and hand over all of your problems as if it were easy. It’s not! Something happens as we grow up from our youth to adulthood that makes us want to be in charge all of the time. It is impossible to hand every choice you will ever make over to God unless you have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our daily advisor. He goes with us from place to place telling us what is acceptable in God’s sight. Many people don’t want God to get that close. They don’t want Him in the bathroom with them.

Keep Watch
Keep Watch

When Christ is waiting in the Garden of Gethsemane at night (Matthew 26:36-46), praying to the Father about the crucifixion, His disciples are sleeping. In Jesus’ presence they were relaxed. They thought that He being the Son of God would protect them. Jesus, knowing the suffering He was about to endure prayed fervently all night asking that the cup be taken from Him if it was the Father’s will. Jesus probably wanted the only friends He had on earth to pray for Him. He had warned them before about His imminent death but apparently the disciples either didn’t believe Him or weren’t worried about it. They were able to sleep during the time when He warned them to pray and keep watch for Him. A couple of days later when Christ was tried they were no where to be found. It seems that they were then realizing that they were in danger, too. If Christ wasn’t going to save Himself from death, perhaps they thought that He wasn’t going to save them either. They couldn’t understand what was about to happen. Peter denied Jesus three times and for the last time, he called a curse on himself.

Spiritual Warfare
Spiritual Warfare

I was watching the news the other day and they were interviewing a man from Miami that claims that there is no such thing as hell, evil or the devil. He also claims that he is the Christ. Apparently, there is some following to his movement but I don’t buy it.

There are a few tricks that work pretty well in deterring people from salvation. One is denying the existence of evil, hence denying the existence of sin and negating the good news of the gospel. Another way to deter people from seeking the Lord is by dramatizing evil and making it so blatantly extreme it is foreign and incomprehensible to most people, as in horror flicks and Hollywood dramas wherein people are taught to fear it if they don’t have a silver bullet or wooden stake. Another way to avert salvation is to familiarize people with sin and evil so that it appears to be commonplace and not so evil — just naughty, as in daytime soap opera naughty. All of these are pretty sneaky tricks and all examples of ways in which spiritual warfare is being waged daily in all of our lives.

Priority Spending
Priority Spending

Few people realize that their spending affects their relationship with God. What we do with our money indicates what is most valuable to us. It indicates what or who we worship.

Half of the world lives on less than two dollars a day.* It would cost 6 billion to solve education problems and to create literacy for the entire world, yet in America 8 billion is spent annually on cosmetic sales. This is why what we do with our money matters.

Religion and Faith
Religion and Faith

There is a difference between being religious and being faithful. Sometimes when I bring up my faith to another person they back away assuming that I am about to preach to them or judge them. There are many reasons why people do this and each person has their own. I’ve heard many people say that they don’t like religion to be forced down their throat. This makes me wonder if they were brought up in a church that pressed the need for religion rather than faith.
